Word Solitaire

Project Overview

Word Solitaire combines word puzzle challenges with the strategic play of TriPeaks solitaire. Players create words by selecting letter cards from a pyramid layout, clearing cards to reveal new ones underneath. Scoring is based on word length and special bonuses, rewarding thoughtful word creation.

Key features include:

1. Power-Ups and Out-of-Moves Options: Players can use power-ups to shuffle letters or get hints, similar to Match-3 IAP mechanics.

2. Lives System: Each level lost costs a life, regenerating over time or available for purchase, boosting retention and monetization.

3. Non-Deterministic Levels: Randomized card layouts increase replayability.

This unique blend of mechanics elevates word games with fresh monetization and replayability, inspired by card game dynamics.

The Problem

Most free-to-play (F2P) word games rely on ad monetization, lacking meaningful in-app purchase (IAP) opportunities. While Match-3 games drive revenue through constructs like lives, out-of-moves, and power-ups, no word game had successfully adopted these features. Additionally, existing word games were often monotonous, with predictable levels lacking replayability.

Word Solitaire aimed to address these gaps by:

1. Introducing microtransactions (e.g., out-of-lives, out-of-moves, power-ups),

2. Creating an experience akin to Match-3 or TriPeaks Solitaire, and

3. Developing levels with non-deterministic elements to boost replayability and engagement.

The Solution

The driving motto behind Word Solitaire became:“Transform word games into an action-packed experience like Match-3—infused with dynamic choices, unpredictable twists, and endless replayability!”

By blending word mechanics with card-based gameplay, Word Solitaire introduced innovative IAP options to the genre, similar to monetization strategies in Match-3 games. This approach made microtransactions viable in a genre previously limited to ad revenue, establishing Word Solitaire as a groundbreaking F2P word game.

I introduced a groundbreaking chance element into the word puzzle genre, blending the core mechanics of word solitaire with the unpredictability commonly found in Match-3 and Solitaire Tripeaks. By integrating this chance-based twist, I created a unique gameplay experience where the outcome is shaped not only by player skill but also by strategic decisions influenced by random elements.

Through rigorous playtests and player feedback sessions, we validated that this innovation significantly enhanced the game’s overall experience. Players found the balance of skill and chance to be highly engaging, leading to increased retention and a more dynamic, enjoyable gameplay loop. This breakthrough in gameplay design elevated the traditional word genre format and attracted a wider audience who appreciated the fresh, exciting challenge!!!

The Result

Word Solitaire launched in 2021 with promising D1 retention metrics, though it was later shelved due to shifting priorities. Its unique mechanics have since been widely adopted, with multiple similar titles emerging, including PeopleFun’s Wordscapes Word Solitaire, which now generates approximately $300,000 to $500,000 per month in IAP revenue.

Contribution: I served as the product owner of Word Solitaire, leading the project from ideation through execution (being the sole game & UX designer). As the vision-holder, I directed and supported development, art, and marketing teams, ensuring alignment across departments. My contributions included designing the core mechanic, crafting the user experience, designing all the levels, producing wireframes, gathering user feedback, setting product priorities and roadmap, and establishing retention hooks.
